ReelShort’s website carries the copyright line of Crazy Maple Studio, Inc., and its terms of use are an agreement with Crazy Maple Studio, Inc., which they say is registered in California with an office in Sunnyvale. On the App Store and Google Play the app is published by New Leaf Publishing, Inc. NPR describes Crazy Maple Studio as Silicon Valley-based; The Guardian calls ReelShort “California-based, Chinese-backed”.

How ReelShort works

You open the app, pick a series and swipe from episode to episode. Each episode ends on a cliffhanger, so the next one starts straight away. The parts that cost money are:

• Coins, bought in the app, unlock episodes. ReelShort’s replies to reviews say free reward coins come from daily check-ins and from watching ads.
• A subscription: its US App Store listing says it is valid for 7 days, lets you watch all series while active, renews automatically and is charged within 24 hours before each new period.
• To stop it renewing, the listing says to cancel at least 24 hours before the next renewal date, in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions.
• Its App Store listing names English and 21 other languages, and gives an age rating of 13+.

How big is ReelShort?

Big enough to have changed the app charts. The Guardian reported in April 2025 that ReelShort had overtaken TikTok as the most popular app in the entertainment section of Apple’s US App Store the previous November, and had been downloaded more than 30 million times since its launch in 2022. NPR reported in March 2025 that Crazy Maple Studio said women make up 70% of ReelShort’s 45 million monthly active users, half of them in the US.

Its own listings: 100M+ downloads on Google Play (checked 28 October 2026), and a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from about 517,000 ratings on the US App Store (29 October 2026).

Is ReelShort worth it?

It depends on how much you watch. At $19.99 for 7 days, keeping the subscription for a month costs about $87 (52 × $19.99 ÷ 12), which is good value only if you watch several series a week. If you want to finish one show you started from an ad, coins or a single week (cancelled straight away so it doesn’t renew) cost less.
