Why are short dramas so popular?
Short dramas are popular because they fit the way people already use their phones: a whole series in one- to two-minute vertical episodes, each ending on a cliffhanger, built on stories people already love. You can watch one episode in a queue or a full series in an evening, and the first episodes are usually free.
Here are the six reasons that come up again and again in reporting on the format, with the numbers behind its rise. Every figure is quoted from the publication named next to it.
1. They are made for the phone in your hand
Short dramas are shot vertically, so they fill a phone screen without turning it. NPR described them in March 2025 as “vertically filmed, under minute-long clips that together are often movie-length soap operas”. There is nothing to set up: open, swipe, watch.
2. Every episode ends on a hook
With an episode lasting about 80 seconds (the median on BingeTube is 81 seconds), every one ends on a reveal, a slap or a door opening. Xinhua’s July 2025 report puts it simply: with minute-long episodes, micro dramas rely on high-stakes plots and constant cliffhangers to hook viewers.

3. Small time commitment, big payoff
Starting a short drama asks for a minute, not an evening. Actor Marc Herrmann told NPR the format doesn’t ask much of you to say you’ll watch one episode, and then half an hour or two hours have gone and you have watched a whole movie. Most BingeTube series run about an hour in total.
4. Stories everyone already knows
Hidden billionaires, true heiresses, contract marriages, werewolf mates, revenge after betrayal. The Guardian reported that viewers are drawn to many of the tropes BookTok readers recognise, such as enemies to lovers, secret billionaires and werewolves. A familiar premise means the story can start at full speed.
5. Escapism when life is a lot
Jen Cooper, founder of the fan site Vertical Drama Love, told The Guardian many fans found the format during hard times, and described the audience as largely women from their early 20s to their 60s. The common appeal, she said, is escapism: people want to see good triumph over bad. NPR reported that ReelShort’s maker says women are 70% of its 45 million monthly users.
6. Free to start
Almost every service lets you watch the first episodes free, then charges once you are hooked. NPR reported paid viewing on the big apps costs $10 to $20 a week or up to $80 a month. That low barrier to the first episode is a big part of how people discover the format.
On BingeTube there are no coins: Episodes 1–5 of every series are free with a free account; then $1.99 for the first week and $9.99 a month, or $4.99 for one series. No ads, no coins.
Short dramas vs a regular TV series
The differences that matter to a viewer, side by side:
| Short drama | Typical TV drama | |
|---|---|---|
| Episode length | About 1–2 minutes (BingeTube median 81 seconds) | About 45–60 minutes |
| Whole series | About an hour (BingeTube median 63 minutes) | Many hours per season |
| Screen | Vertical, made for a phone | Horizontal, made for a TV |
| Filming | 7–10 days for a series (The Guardian) | Months |
| How you pay | First episodes free, then coins, a weekly pass or a membership | A streaming subscription or TV package |
What critics say
Not everyone is a fan, and the reporting says so. The Guardian’s headline called it a format of “clickbait titles and cliffhangers”. A viewer NPR interviewed admitted to “cheesy acting” yet bought a pass to finish an 85-part series because the cliffhanger worked. NPR also reported, citing Chinese media, that between 2022 and 2023 government officials removed over 25,000 micro dramas for “violent, low-style or vulgar content”.
Pricing is the other complaint: weekly passes on the big apps add up quickly, and coins make it hard to know what a series will cost before you start. Read the price and the renewal period before paying for any of them.

Questions
Why are short dramas so addictive?
Each episode lasts a minute or two and ends on a cliffhanger, so stopping always means leaving a twist unresolved. Familiar tropes let the story start at full speed.
Who watches short dramas?
Mostly women, according to reporting: NPR said ReelShort’s maker reports women are 70% of its 45 million monthly users, and the founder of Vertical Drama Love told The Guardian the audience is largely women from their early 20s to their 60s.
Where did short dramas come from?
China, where they are called duanju. They grew out of short-video platforms around 2018 and spread to the US from 2022, according to Wikipedia’s article on duanju.
Are short dramas a fad?
Nobody can say for certain. NPR quoted a reporter wondering whether they are a trend, while the US actors’ union SAG-AFTRA created a dedicated Verticals Agreement in October 2025, a sign the industry is taking the format seriously.
