Short drama coins, explained

On most short drama apps, coins are the in-app money you spend to unlock one episode at a time after the free ones. You buy them in packs, earn a few free ones from daily check-ins and ads, and they can only be used in that app; the alternative is a weekly or monthly plan that unlocks everything while it lasts.

Below: what each big app’s own listing and terms say about coins (read on 29 October 2026), what an episode costs in practice, and how to tell when coins beat a subscription.

How coins work

  • You buy coin packs through the App Store or Google Play (for example, GoodShort’s US listing sells 500 coins for $4.99).
  • Each locked episode costs a number of coins, set by the app. Neither ReelShort’s, DramaBox’s nor ShortMax’s US App Store listing publishes a per-episode price.
  • Free coins come from daily check-ins, tasks and watching ads: ReelShort and DramaBox both say so in their replies to reviews.
  • Coins stay in that app. The terms of DramaBox, GoodShort and ShortMax say coins can only be used there and can’t be transferred or refunded.

What does an episode cost in coins?

The apps don’t publish it, so here is the one figure we could source. MIT Technology Review reported in 2024 that on FlexTV you could pay $5 for 500 coins, which unlocked about seven episodes: roughly 70 cents an episode.

As an illustration only (prices vary by app, series and country): at 70 cents an episode, a series of 43 episodes, the median on BingeTube, with the first five free would cost about $27 in coins. That is more than one $19.99 week of ReelShort’s subscription, and far more than BingeTube’s $9.99 monthly membership for every series.

Coins or a subscription: which is cheaper?

Coins make sense if…

you only want the last few episodes of one series, you are happy to collect free coins from check-ins and ads, or you watch rarely.

A plan makes sense if…

you watch more than one series a week. Weekly plans renew every 7 days, so check the period next to the price and cancel at least 24 hours before renewal if you only want one week. NPR reported paid viewing on the big apps costs $10 to $20 a week or up to $80 a month.

Or skip coins altogether

BingeTube has no coins at all. A membership unlocks every episode of every series: new members pay $1.99 for the first week, then $9.99 a month. Or buy one series once for $4.99. Prices are in US dollars; a few countries have a lower local price.

How to check the price before you pay

On the App Store

Open the app’s page and scroll to “In-App Purchases”. It lists up to ten purchases with their names and prices for your country. A name like “Weekly Pass” or “Subscription” is a plan; the listing’s description often says how long a plan lasts.

On Google Play

The app’s page shows “In-app purchases” and a price range per item. The exact plans and periods appear in the app before you confirm.

In the app

Before you tap buy, read the line next to the price: “/week”, “7 days” or “auto-renews” tells you it is a subscription that will charge again. Your store’s purchase sheet repeats the price and the renewal period; cancel it in your store’s subscriptions if you only want one period.

Apple: cancel a subscription · Google Play: cancel a subscription

Watch out for

  • Expiring free coins: ShortMax’s terms say bonus expires; check your wallet in each app.
  • Coins left over when you switch apps: they can’t be moved or refunded.
  • Weekly renewals: a plan bought “for a week” renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends, on every app above.
