The Mafia Don Hired Me as His Wife

The story of The Mafia Don Hired Me as His Wife

For three years, Nora took care of her husband and his whole family, but he called her a freeloader, said her looks embarrassed him and scorned her rural background. Three days after he threw her out with an old travel bag and thirty-six dollars, Nora answers an odd job flyer seeking a mother for a child.

The flyer leads her to the estate of Luca Castellano, head of one of the city's oldest mafia clans. The staff make it clear that the Don wants a mother for his son, not a wife for himself, and Nora is happy with that. Her new charge, four-year-old Leo, screams that every woman is bad and calls her fat and ugly, but Nora knows no child lashes out without a reason. She turns dinner into a game about a little hero who needs spinach to grow strong, and soon Leo is clearing his plate. Thirteen nannies have quit, and none of them ever got him to eat on his own.

That night, Luca explains that his enemies once kidnapped Leo, leaving him terrified of strangers and of leaving the estate. He proposes a legal marriage for Leo's sake, because a child needs a bond that will not vanish, with separate finances, a generous monthly allowance and separate floors. Nora must never set foot on the third floor. She agrees, convinced that romance is the last thing on her mind.
