Nora Bennett's husband throws her out for eating too much. She signs the divorce papers that night and leaves with nothing but a duffel bag and thirty-six dollars. Wandering the rainy streets, she spots a flyer on a utility pole: stepmother needed, room and board included.

The address leads to the estate of Luca Castellano, head of New York's oldest mafia family. The butler warns her that the Don needs a mother for his child, not a wife, and that she should not get any ideas. Nora is secretly delighted. A free roof sounds like a miracle, and another husband is the last thing she wants. Minutes after glimpsing him deal harshly with a traitor, the feared Don is an exhausted father at the dinner table, begging his little boy to take one bite.

Leo dives under the table, calls her fat and ugly and insists all women are bad. Nora grabs two action figures and starts feeding Little Hero spinach instead, until Leo lunges for the spoon, determined to grow stronger than his toy. Luca smiles in approval.

That night, Nora moves in and is warned never to go to the third floor. Luca asks about her past, and she tells him how her ex's family made her quit her job and treated her like an unpaid babysitter. He explains that his enemies terrified Leo when he was little, offers her a contract marriage with everything kept separate, and Nora feels her heart skip a beat.
