When Mommy Comes Home

The story of When Mommy Comes Home

Pearl is a young girl whose mind remains that of a five-year-old after a gas accident. Her family has gradually distanced themselves from her while her sister Chloe celebrates her acceptance to a top university. Chloe asks their parents for a graduation trip just for the three of them, and they reluctantly agree, promising Pearl treats and care before leaving. Pearl waits by the door, afraid to open it because her mother warned her that dangerous wolves outside would get her.

As the family prepares for their two-day trip, they stock the fridge, teach Pearl how to use the microwave, and arrange for Auntie Shirley to watch her. After the parents leave, the house suddenly loses power, and Auntie Shirley does not arrive as expected. Pearl becomes frightened and calls her mother, who is unaware of the situation's seriousness. The family realizes they have neglected Pearl and that she is vulnerable and alone with no one to care for her.

The story focuses on Pearl’s patient wait and growing isolation as her family struggles to balance their desires and responsibilities. It highlights the consequences of neglect and broken promises when Pearl is left alone in a dark, powerless home.
