Iris is the lowest Omega slave in the Blood Moon Pack. Every day she and the other slaves must throw silver stones into a deep pit, where they are told a rogue beast is locked away for trying to attack the Alpha. Brenda, the Gamma Overseer, cracks her whip and orders them to keep throwing until the monster rots. Silver is torture for werewolves, but no scream ever comes from the dark.

Iris's wolf instinct tells her that whoever is down there is still breathing. After a nightmare of being trapped in the pit herself, she sneaks back under a blood-red moon and lowers her piece of bread in a basket. An overwhelming Alpha aura rises from below, and red eyes open in the dark, eyes only a Lycan king could have. The prisoner was never a rogue.

The man has spent three years in the pit with no food or water, and Iris's bread is his first meal in all that time. Even weak, he tells her to leave for her own safety. Iris realizes the pit is not a prison but a hidden grave for someone important, and that the Alpha's story is a lie. When he asks for healing salve and clean bandages, a privilege no slave can touch, she promises to try. Her only treasure is a silver pendant from her mother, and she offers it to Luke, a greedy half-breed Omega near the medical wing, in exchange for the salve, stepping deeper into danger.
