Duskreach

The story of Duskreach

In the shadowed halls of House Corven, Elara Wynne lies hurt at the hunting lodge, begging Cassian to stop. Soon afterward she is gone, and the brother who loved her is left with questions no one will answer.

Trouble is gathering beyond the castle walls. Three northern villages have vanished, two towns have stopped sending reports, and the Blight is moving south again. The family that held Duskreach, the fortress guarding the northern road, is dead. House Corven owes the north a shield, and their father chooses the younger brother to go and rebuild it. Cassian sneers that their father has not given him a lordship but a grave. He asks only when he leaves. The answer is dawn.

Before he goes, Cassian taunts him, asking whether he really believes Elara ran away from him and boasting that she begged him to stop. The insult ends in a fight. Cassian has a Chosen at his side, and in the clash, a power surfaces that no one can explain.

Afterward, the younger brother learns what a Chosen truly is: a woman born with power most people will never touch, who must willingly choose her Lord. The bond cannot be forced, one Lord takes one Chosen, and as the Lord grows stronger, she can draw more power through their bond. Cassian mocks that no Chosen would ever pick a failure like him. But the Mark appears only on a Chosen, and the balance of power in Duskreach is about to shift.
