Sailing Away from My Ex

The story of Sailing Away from My Ex

In the harbor town of Lakeport, a tradition requires all unmarried men to draw flags before the annual speedboat race. Drawing a gold flag allows a man to fly it on his boat and take the girl he loves away to marry. Vargo, the protagonist, has drawn dark blue flags for seven consecutive years, becoming the town's most famous bachelor. He loves Vanessa Sullivan, from the powerful Sullivan family that hosts the race, but overhears her conspiring with her sister Sophie to swap his gold flag for a dark blue one. Vanessa plans to keep her stepbrother Liam Moore, who has had heart surgery, as her partner instead.

At the docks, Vargo is isolated and mocked by other men. Vanessa openly favors Liam, who always draws gold flags and rides with her every year. Vargo's frustration leads him to ram Liam's boat, resulting in Vanessa's family punishing him by tying him up and throwing him into the lake. Despite the hardship and betrayal, Vargo remains determined to win Vanessa's hand. After overhearing Vanessa's true intentions, he calmly steps forward to draw a flag himself as the race begins, confronting the town's traditions and expectations.
