I Stopped Calling Them Mom and Dad

The story of I Stopped Calling Them Mom and Dad

Claire has lived her whole life believing her family is poor, working multiple jobs to pay for her college tuition while her younger sister Chloe enjoys a privileged life. Claire's world unravels when she discovers that Chloe's godmother, a wealthy woman, is actually her own mother. She overhears a conversation revealing that her parents have deliberately kept their fortune hidden and sabotaged Claire's academic opportunities to protect Chloe and maintain their secret. Claire learns that her parents drugged her before her SATs, arranged for a professor to harass her, and burdened her with loans, all to keep her from surpassing Chloe.

As Claire confronts the painful truth, she calls her mother for help regarding the professor's harassment but is met with cold dismissal and a lack of protection. Her mother admits her inability to protect Claire and encourages her to leave school if she is unhappy, despite the sacrifices made to keep the family secret. Claire is overwhelmed by betrayal and fear, standing at a crossroads about her future. She eventually disappears and is taken in by the kind, wealthy Cole family, setting the stage for her search for freedom and identity.
