Drowning in Him

The story of Drowning in Him

Nova has lived with a deep fear of water since she nearly drowned as a child. Her mother, Natasha, dismisses that fear and worries Nova will embarrass her at next week’s family party, where everyone is expected to swim. Instead of letting Nova hire another instructor, Natasha orders Thorn, her husband and a professional swim coach, to teach her.

Thorn speaks gently to Nova and tells her not to be afraid, but his lessons soon feel troubling. In the pool, Nova depends on him because letting go means sinking, while Natasha watches from nearby and criticizes her. Thorn’s closeness and touch leave Nova ashamed, confused, and unsure how to react.

As the lessons move into deeper water, Nova is caught between her childhood fear, her mother’s demand that she obey, and Thorn’s unsettling behavior. With Natasha unaware of what Nova is experiencing, the pool becomes a place where Nova must struggle to stay afloat both physically and emotionally.
