Bow to 10-Year-Old Archmage Aldric

The story of Bow to 10-Year-Old Archmage Aldric

At three years old, Aldric could not speak a word. His family, a thousand-year-old house of magic, dismissed him as a mute with no magic and cast him out along with his sick mother. Last year, illness took her, while his grandfather and his cowardly father did nothing. Now, after seven years away, the family suddenly calls ten-year-old Aldric home.

Aldric knows exactly why. The Queen's banquet is in two days, and the family must attend in full or face punishment. The invitation will open only with the mark of every family member. What no one suspects is that Aldric's silence is a choice. His body also holds the soul of Malogos, the dark sorcerer feared by demons, who began a Silence Curse at three to regain his former power. For seven years, he has been quietly mastering forbidden spells.

Back in the family hall, relatives mock him as a silent freak and a wretch who will shame them all. His grandfather insists Aldric will never wander again. Aldric answers, through a maid who reads his hands, that they threw him away like refuse, and that he has returned only to make them kneel and repent at his mother's grave.

To get his mark on the invitation, an elder offers to teach him signal casting, magic that needs no chant, and the family laughs when he seems slow to learn. Meanwhile, someone quietly orders that once Aldric leaves his seal, he should be killed.
